How to make a gathered skirt without a pattern

I have learnt to make a gathered skirt without a pattern and I made a video tutorial to share the method I use with you. Check it out below or on my YouTube Channel. Keep scrolling for a summary of the important info and some photos of course!

Geese Flock Cotton Lawn from Fabric Godmother at £15 per meter. This is more than I would usually spend but it was a birthday present and it is beautiful! It’s wonderfully light and drapey, which has created a lovely summer weight skirt. It is a bit see through so I chose to use lining fabric from John Lewis in the most similar colour they had in stock.

  • Fabric
  • Lining fabric (optional)
  • 8 inch invisible zip
  • Iron on interfacing
  • Thread
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Chalk/something to mark with (I use
  • Sewing machine

Pieces to cut out:

Skirt Front:
width = hip measurement + 1.5cm + 1.5cm (seam allowances/SA)
length = what ever length you like + 1.5cm SA + 2cm for the hem

2 x Skirt Back:
width = 1/2 hip measurement + 1.5cm SA +1.5cm SA
length = same as for the skirt front

Waistband plus interfacing cut on fold:
width = (wait measurement + 1.5cm SA + 1.5cm SA) / 2  (you divide it by 2 because it is being cut on the fold)
depth = chose how thick you would like your waistband to be, double this and + 1.5cm SA + 1.5cm SA

Watch my video to see the step by step action!

Et voila!
