After New York we flew on to Chicago and fell completely in love with it. We were there fore three full days which was just enough to squeeze all the most important things in but the thought that we could have stayed way longer was unanimous. Chicago was such a pleasant contrast to New York. …

One Skirt Three Ways

We live in a throw away society and I think this is particularly evident when looking at the fashion industry. I am definitely a culprit of being really excited about a new piece of clothing but then falling into a rut of wearing it within exactly the same outfit time and time again, and sure …

Holidaying in Umbria, Italy

Leave a Comment / travel / By lizzieb262

At the end of June I went on holiday to Italy and it was the most wonderful trip. We were staying in Umbria, which is the county next to Tuscany. It’s inland so instead of the coastline it boasts the most beautiful, rolling countryside and countless vineyards. I am not the sort of person who …

It’s been a work in progress since November 2017 so it’s officially my slowest make to date 😂 thank goodness it’s finally finished!

It’s true what they say: a tailor’s pressing c It’s true what they say: a tailor’s pressing clapper is a game changer. I’ve been working on finishing my @sewoveritlondon #soichloecoat , which has hung abandoned in the wardrobe for a couple of years 🙈. I didn’t have a clapper when I first started making it and the seams were very bouncy, despite my best efforts to press the wool fabric into submission. It is looking a million times better now I’ve been at it with this clapper!! The clapper absorbs the steam and sort of “sets” the seam as the fabric cools. It’s brilliant!!

Why am I wearing a one armed garment featuring raw Why am I wearing a one armed garment featuring raw edges and fastened with pins? Because it’s time to talk toiles!

A toile (pronounced “twaal”) is a test version of a garment in a cheaper fabric (often calico) that allows you to assess and tweak the fit and style before cutting into your precious fashion fabric. Sewing a toile also gives the chance to test out any tricky or new techniques before the real thing.

The resulting garments fit me so much better since I’ve started to make toiles, and I now consider it a key step in the dressmaking process. It can be tempting to race to the finish line but taking the extra time to get a better fitting garment is so worth it ✂️🧵🪡💕
